In 2025, European Mobility Week (16–22 September) is held for the twenty-fourth time, and it ends in Car-Free Day. This series of events aims to draw attention to the problems caused by increased car traffic – air pollution, noise, congestion and accident risks among others –, and, as an alternative, to popularise environment-friendly and sustainable (micro)mobility – public transport, cycling and walking. The number of passenger cars has risen more than four-fold (to 4.3 million) in Hungary since 1980, while passenger traffic in urban passenger transport has had a decreasing trend.

In regard to telecommunication services close to HUF 339 billion revenue has been realised at service providers in the 2nd quarter of 2025, 59% of this coming from mobile voice and mobile internet services. The average time for fixed line calls (nearly 6 minutes) and mobile calls (nearly 3.5 minutes) both increased by 2.5% compared to the same year.

The number of fixed-line internet services subscriptions surpassed by 2.9% the one year earlier data in the 2nd quarter of 2025, due to the 9.8% increase of the optical segment. Packages offering at least 500 Mbit/s nominal download speed reached 61% of all subscriptions. Fixed-line internet download traffic was 21%, mobile data traffic 19% higher than in the same period of 2024.

The rise in rental prices slowed in August 2025: nationwide they increased by 1.1%, and in Budapest by 0.7% compared to the previous month. In August, the nominal rent index exceeded the 2015 base by 129% nationwide and by 116% in the capital, while in real terms the increases were 32% and 25%, respectively. Over the course of a year, nominal rents grew by around 7–8%, while real rents rose by approximately 3%.

The 2025 US Open, which can be proud of several points of interest and records, is held between 24 August and 7 September. Among Grand Slam tournaments, the US Open Tennis Championships were the first that, in 1973, (ending sexual discrimination) introduced identical prize money to be awarded in the main events – women’s and men’s singles. The total prize to be awarded in this year’s competition (90 million dollars) as well as the 5 million dollars to be awarded to both singles winners are equally records in tennis history.

In September 2025, 1.1 million students have begun their studies in various levels of initial and vocational education in full-time education, which is almost the same as the previous school year. In 2024, households with students aged 24 and younger spent an average of 45.6 thousand forints per child on starting school. Although most textbooks are available free of charge to students in initial and vocational education, the purchase of workbooks, foreign language books and publications that students wish to keep still represents additional expenses for families.

The yearbook provides an overview of Hungary's demographic, social and economic trends, environmental characteristics and their changes over time, with the help of tens of thousands of data in some 500 tables, charts and maps. In the chapter devoted to earnings and incomes, it is a novelty compared to previous years that net earnings in which allowances and types of exemptions are accounted for, too, came into focus from 2019. In the number of employees, people working in working time shorter than 60 working hours per month are also taken into account. In addition, the theme of environment is completed with areas declared world heritage sites by UNESCO.

The world is going to watch, between 26–30 August 2025 the 64th Pentathlon World Championship held in Kaunas, Lithuania. The semi-finals and finals qualifying competition days for men and women are going to take place between 26 and 29 August, finals will be held on 30 August in the Zalgiris Arena. The competition is an opportunity, beside the world champion title, for obtaining Olympic ranking points, too. Hungary will be represented by Blanka Guzi, Blanka Bauer, Emma Mészáros, Noémi Eszes and Rita Erdős in women’s sports and by Mihály Koleszár, András Gáll, Balázs Szép, Botond Tamás and Bőhm Csaba in men’s.
